Kentucky Lineman’s Rodeo
Later this month, Nolin RECC will host the 15th Annual Kentucky Lineman’s Rodeo. This event will be September 26 and 27 at the Hardin County Fairgrounds. The general public is welcome to attend; admission is free.
Much like a traditional rodeo romanticizes the American cowboy and the way that Stihl Timbersports is nostalgic in honoring the manual labor of the logging industry, our Lineman’s Rodeo is a friendly competition focused on pole climbing and the other hard skills that made the lineworker a very important figure in helping electrify our nation during the mid-20th century. While improvements in technology and equipment have made the trade slightly less labor intensive and significantly safer, all skilled lineworkers will tell you that they should be able to do most things off of a set of hooks that they can from the comfort of a bucket truck. Even today, when poles and conductors cannot be accessed by truck or other equipment, these hard skills remain vital to restoration when Mother Nature strikes.
We anticipate close to 100 lineworkers from across the state participating in this year’s event. They will take on a series of four to five staged events to test their skill, both as individuals and in team settings. Competitors are scored on a basis of speed and precision. Any infractions—technical or safety related—
result in a scoring deduction. When all other things are considered equal, the fastest speed wins. Awards are handed out on an individual event and cumulative basis.
For anyone who is interested in seeing firsthand what lineworkers do, this is a tremendous opportunity to bring your family and watch a demonstration of the hard work that goes into keeping your lights on. Food trucks will be on site serving lunch and entertainment will be available for children. For any young people who think they may be interested in the lineworker trade, we encourage you to stop by, not just to watch the competition, but to discuss the trade with any of the vendors and real-life lineworker who will be at the rodeo.
We look forward to seeing you.
