International Year of Cooperatives, this name may seem to be one that will not apply to you. However, one in four Americans is a co-op member.

During the International Year of Cooperatives it's important to remember that cooperatives put people first - NOT the bottom line. Through scholarships, youth tours, and providing families with affordable electric service Nolin RECC is committed to improving the quality of life for its members.

Here is fact number 1 on Co-ops:

The nation's 900-plus electric co-ops:

  • Serve about 42 million people in 47 states-that's 18 million businesses, homes, schools, churches, farms, irrigation systems, and other establishments in 2,500 of 3,141 counties.
  • Employ 70,000.
  • Retire more than $500 million in capital credits annually.
  • Own assets worth $130 billion.
  • Own and maintain 2.5 million miles, or 42 percent, of the nation's electric distribution lines, covering three-quarters of the nation's land mass.

Here is fact number 2 on Co-ops:

There are many types of co-ops throughout the United States that generate money and jobs for our economy:

  • More than 29,000 cooperatives operate in the U.S.
  • The total assets of these co-ops is more than $3 trillion
  • The annual revenue is $652 billion
  • More than two million people are employed by cooperatives

Here is fact number 3 on Co-ops:

  • Cooperatives are owned by those they serve - they have members/owners, not customers
  • Cooperatives are not-for-profit businesses that are more concerned about their members than the bottom line

Here is fact number 4 on Co-ops:

Cooperatives operate under 7 guiding Principles. Here are two:

  • Voluntary and Open Membership: Membership is available to all who can reasonably use its services, regardless of race, religion, sex, or economic circumstances.
  • Democratic Member Control: Each co-op member has one vote and is treated equally in respect to sharing their opinions and concerns about the co-op. Control remains in the hands of all members not just a few. Directors are elected from the membership by other members (one member, one vote).

Here is fact number 5 on Co-ops:

Cooperatives operate under 7 guiding Principles. Here are two:

  • Members' Economic Participation: Members contribute equally to, and democratically control the capital of their cooperative. Co-ops provide services "at cost" and remain not-for-profit regardless of the value of benefits delivered.
  • Autonomy and Independence: Co-ops are self-help organizations controlled by their members. If cooperatives enter into agreements with others or raise money from outside sources, they do so on terms that maintain democratic control as well as their unique identity.

Here is fact number 6 on Co-ops:

Cooperatives operate under 7 guiding Principles. Here are two:

  • Education, Training, and Information: Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-ops.
  • Cooperation among Cooperatives: Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the co-op movement by working together through local, national, regional, and international cooperative structures.

Here is fact number 7 on Co-ops:

Cooperatives operate under 7 guiding Principles. Here is the 7th Cooperative Principle:

  • Concern for Community: While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.

Here is fact number 8 on Co-ops:

One of every four Americans is a co-op member.

Here is fact number 9 on co-ops:

Members of a cooperative often get money back (called capital credits or patronage refunds) when the co-op's in good financial shape. More than $9.5 billion has been returned to members by electric co-ops since 1988. Nolin pays capital credits/margins to its members when the co-op is financially stable and hopes to be able to do so again in the near future.

Here is fact number 10 on co-ops:

Cooperative members vote annually to decide who will serve as directors of their co-op. Each member is entitled to one vote regardless of how many accounts they may have or where they live in the cooperative service area. This is called "Democratic Control" and is one of the 7 Cooperative Principles.

Here is fact number 11 on co-ops:

As a Touchstone Energy Cooperative, Nolin RECC adheres to four core values in our everyday operations and service to our members and community. Those values are Integrity, Accountability, Innovation, and Commitment to Community.

Here is fact number 12 on co-ops:

Cooperatives have an obligation to inform and educate their members about important events and news affecting the co-op. This is one of the seven Cooperative Principles and Nolin RECC considers it to be extremely important in our everyday operations and continued success.

Each month a new co-op fact will be posted to this web site.
