Co-op Careers: Devon Woosley
Job title:
Manager – Engineering
How long you have held this role, any previous roles within Nolin:
I have been in my current role for six years, and I have been at Nolin for almost eleven years. I was initially hired as a Principal SCADA Engineer, and my role evolved to System Engineer/ SCADA Administrator prior to my current position.
Primary responsibilities:
– Inside Nolin (employee facing)
As a member of the co-op’s executive staff, I get to work with other department heads and working groups while overseeing the activities of the engineering department.
– Outside Nolin (member facing)
I work directly with many of our large commercial and industrial accounts on any needs they may have. For certain new projects, I interact with developers or designers. I also interact regularly with other co-ops and vendors.
How does your role fit into the organizational structure:
I report to the President and CEO and oversee the Engineering department.
What roles report to you:
E&O Administrative Assistant, Line Design Superintendent who oversees our line design team, GIS Administrator, Meter & Power Use Controller, System Engineer, System Engineering specialist, and Energy Services Specialist
Knowledge, skills, abilities needed for your role:
Being able to communicate and work well with others is a skillset that I’ve found to be very important, as teamwork can overcome any challenge. Problem solving is a critical skill, both for technical and non-technical challenges that arise. An appreciation for new technology and innovation is also important.
Education needed for your role (to be hired into the role, any continuing education once in role):
Bachelor’s degree in engineering degree. I pursue continuing education on the latest safety code, software solutions, products and industry trends, etc.
Most challenging part of your job:
Being involved in many different things is probably the biggest challenge but is also my favorite part of the job. In a given day, I might be involved in anything from assisting an industrial member in projecting energy usage, working with our line design team on the design for a new development, analyzing data in a spreadsheet or system model, or working in a substation. My job is a challenge because I have to know a little about many different things, but it also means my job is always new and exciting. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and my time at Nolin has flown by!
