Planning to construct or move a grain bin?
Before constructing a new grain bin (or moving an existing bin), be sure to contact us at 270-765-6153 to review the site-specific safety clearance considerations and your electrical service requirements. Any clearance violations identified after installation may require the relocation of the grain bin or the power lines, both of which are costly.
1. Contact us before the grain bin pad is poured to ensure it is located a safe distance from overhead power lines.
The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requires specific clearances for overhead electric lines around grain bins, with different standards for those filled by portable or permanent augers, conveyors and elevators. The required clearances/distances between power lines and grain bins are greater than you might expect, and our engineering department can meet with you to ensure all requirements are met prior to installation.
2. Contact us before the bin site is confirmed to ensure there are adequate electrical facilities in place to handle the new electric load.
You or your electrician will need to provide us with the electric service requirements including service size, single or three phase, information about motor sizes, etc. using our electrical load sheet. We will review with you the available options and associated construction costs based on your service needs.
3. Contact us before you purchase the bin or add any new motor load to ensure that your load functions properly and does not compromise the quality of the cooperative’s electrical service delivered to others.
Individual single phase motors of 10 HP or larger or individual three phase motors of 30 HP or larger must be analyzed by our team. The startup of large motors may create power quality concerns such as “flicker” or voltage sag, which may have impacts beyond your individual service. We will analyze your specific motors prior to installation and will inform you of any additional requirements for your application such as soft start. If power quality concerns are observed after installation, it may be more costly to remedy.
