Generac Standby Generator: How it Works
With a Generac Standby generator, you can avoid the hassle of setting up a portable generator and running extension cords into your home when the power goes out. With the included 200 A automatic transfer switch, your generator will automatically start when a utility power outage occurs and will automatically stop when utility power is restored. You have backup power within seconds of a utility power outage – long before you would’ve had time to get the portable generator out of the garage.
What is the process to purchase/install?
- Nolin’s material supplier stocks the standby generators and the related accessories listed below.
- Member contacts Nolin and reviews program details/offerings as needed.
- Member obtains installation quotes from third-party installers/electricians and selects someone to complete installation.
- Member contacts Nolin when ready to purchase, completes purchase acknowledgement, and provides full payment. (Payment must be made in cash or check only).
- Order is shipped to Nolin within 2-3 weeks, and we will notify member or installer/electrician when generator is available for pickup at Nolin’s Elizabethtown office.
- Your installer will schedule a time to install and will need to contact Nolin RECC’s Dispatch Operations Center to request a temporary disconnect of your electric service to allow them to safely complete the installation. The temporary disconnect/reconnect process is usually done the same day.
- Prior to reconnect, the homeowner or electrician will need to sign our 5-Day Emergency Service Repair/Change Out agreement on site. By signing, you are acknowledging understanding that you will obtain an approved electrical inspection within five days.
- You can reach Nolin RECC’s Dispatch Operations Center by calling our office at (270) 765-6153 and following the prompts for “Reporting an Outage”.
Who installs and maintains the generator and transfer switch?
- Member selects an installer and maintenance provider of their choice.
- Nolin does not install or maintain the equipment, and we do not recommend any specific providers for these services.
- All warranties are provided through Generac.
What size generator do I need?
- Your installer/electrician will be able to assist in proper sizing for your specific home.
- Nolin will not recommend a specific size for your home but upon request, we will be happy to provide you with historical peak hourly energy usage for your home that you can share with your installer/electrician to aid in sizing.
- Do you want whole-home or partial backup? Sizing is heavily dependent on your large appliance and HVAC needs. The transfer switch includes Smart A/C module that can shed up to four HVAC units (in a priority order) in the event of generator overload by interrupting the 24 VAC thermostat control signal to your unit. This option can be discussed with your installer/electrician.
